    he Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP) is cordially inviting you to apply for fellowship awards in the 2022 KASBP Spring eSymposium to be hThe Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP) is cordially inviting you to apply for fellowship awards in the 2022 KASBP Spring eSymposium to be held virtually on June 9th (Thu.) ~ June 1oth (Fri.) from 7 PM to 11 PM EST.  As an honored tradition, we award fellowships to young scholars, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows with a proven record of stellar contributions to biomedical research. 

    The KASBP symposium has been an excellent venue for emerging scientists and scholars to connect with a large professional Korean-American scientist network. During the symposium you will also be exposed to various cutting-edge sciences in drug discovery and development from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.


    Invited Area: 

    Medical sciences, Biological & Pharmaceutical sciences, Organic/Medicinal chemistry, and/or areas related to drug discovery and development


    Submission Requirement*:

    1. All applicants must be registered to the KASBP Spring eSymposium before applying.
    2. All awardees are required to give a 5-min oral talk and poster presentation. 
    3. All applicants are encouraged to present posters, regardless of award. All poster presenters will receive partial financial support. Please e-mail your Abstract, Title, and CV to the committee chair. 
      1. Due date:   May 20, 2022 (Awardees will be notified by May 25, 2022)
      2. Format: Abstract, Title, and CV (in WORD)

  • 2020년 KASBP-대웅 Award 수상자 City of Hope암병원의 래리곽(Larry Kwak)박사 선정

    2020년도 KASBP-대웅상 수상자로 래리곽(Larry Kwak)박사님께서 선정이 되셨습니다. 곽 박사님께서는 혈액종양학의 권위자이시며 면역치료, CAR-T 등으로 많은 성과를 올리셨습니다. 현재 캘리포니아의 City of Hope 암병원의 Vice President이시고 Deputy Director로 계십니다. 이번 KASBP 가을 심포지엄 (29일)에 'Overcoming tumor escape from immunotherapy'라는 제목으로 keynote presentation이 있을 예정입니다. 래리곽 박사님의 수상을 진심으로 축하드립니다 !

  • 미래 임상시험 키워드 2가지는 ‘데이터’와 ‘디지털’ - 약업신문

    코로나19가 바꿔놓은 임상시험 진행 환경에 따라 향후 관련 분야에서 데이터(data)와 디지털(digital)이 주요한 키워드로 떠오를 전망이다.

    22일(현지 시간) 주보스턴 총영사관의 주관으로 개최된 ‘COVID 시대 제약바이오 산업 변화와 대응 전략’ 웨비나에서는 KASBP(재미한인제약인협회) 박수희 회장의 발표가 진행됐다.

    박 회장은 코로나19로 인해 제약업계, 그 중에도 임상시험 분야에 많은 변화가 일어났다고 말했다.

    그는 “제약산업에서 코로나19로 인해 가장 많은 타격을 받은 분야는 임상시험 분야다. 임상시험을 진행할 때 환자들을 직접 만나 관리가 이뤄져야 하는데 그럴수가 없다”고 말했다.

    이어 “또 보통 하나의 신약 개발에 10~15년의 기간이 요구되는데, 코로나19의 백신의 경우 1~2년 사이에 모든 임상을 마쳐야 하는 상황이다. 그렇다면 이걸 어떻게 가능하게 해야 할 지 고민이 된다”고 말했다.

    그는 “최근 여러 빅파마들의 동향을 보면 이런 상황의 키워드는 크게 두 가지 단어로 압축이 된다. 하나는 데이터(data), 다른 하나는 디지털(digital)이다. 이제는 사람들을 대면하기가 어렵기 때문에 기존의 데이터를 신약 개발에 이용하는 방법과 디지털 기술을 이용해 비대면으로 임상을 진행하는 방법 등이 떠오르고 있다”고 설명했다.

    대표적으로 가상(virtual) 임상시험은 환자들이 앱을 이용해 비대면으로 각자의 상황을 모니터링하고 그것을 디지털로 전송해 데이터화한 다음, 결과를 도출하는 방식으로 이뤄진다.

    박 회장은 “앞으로 임상시험의 방향성은 디지털 기술이 우세가 되는, 앱(app) 기반의 자가 모니터링이 가능한 디바이스의 개발 등이 활성화될 것이다. 또 발생하는 모든 데이터를 처리하기 위해서는 AI나 알고리즘을 이용하는 방법이 빠른 속도로 발전할 것”이라고 강조했다.

    이어 “또 기초 임상시험 분야에도 이런 점들이 굉장히 많이 접목돼 있다. 기존에 모아져있는 데이터를 다방면으로 측정해 활용하는 것이다. AI는 수 년 전부터 유망했지만 아직까지 절정은 오지 않았다고 본다. 그러나 이런 코로나19 상황에 맞추어 앞으로 빠른 속도로 개발되면서 수요가 많이 늘지 않을까 생각한다”고 말했다.

    박 회장은 신약 개발에서 가장 중요하다고 생각하는 점으로 ‘정보’를 꼽았다.

    그는 “현재 신약 후보 물질 탐색의 트렌드는 기술을 활용하는 것이다. 그렇다면 세상에는 굉장히 많은 기술, 플랫폼이 있는데 이 많은 것 중에 어떤 것에 집중해야 해야 성공적인 신약 개발에 다가설 수 있느냐는 의문이 들게 된다”고 말했다.

    이어 “결국에는 ‘정보 싸움’이라고 본다. 정보를 잘 획득하려면 소통(communication)이 가장 중요하다. 따라서 제약업계 종사자들이 KASBP에서 개최하는 모임을 포함한 여러 행사에 참석해 많은 교류를 나눴으면 한다”고 전했다.
